Port Jefferson, Long Island, NY
My father in law has lived on Long Island as a monk in an Orthodox Monastery for probably the last 18 years or so. We used to visit frequently when our oldest was younger, but actually had not gone back to NY in the past 13 years. This year was the year and I am already thinking a short trip at Christmas might be nice! We visited with him, but also visited Long Island showing the boys some of the places we had visited in the past and discovering new spots.

We’ve visited Port Jefferson before, but we had never taken the ferry there. It goes to Connecticut and back and you can walk on or bring your car. You also have the option of doing the round trip without getting off which is what we did.

The ride took a bit longer than I expected because you do have to wait where it docks for the cars to load and unload. We did enjoy it though as the scenery was pretty, and we were able to walk around the decks.
Since we had just eaten, we were not hungry, but I think it would be fun to actually picnic on the ferry. We did order a couple pretzels and snacks on the ride back.
Thankfully, we were prepared for the cold breeze as we all were wearing sweatshirts, and the sun coming out really helped. We went back and forth on different parts of the ferry as we got a little cold and bored in one area. We did end up staying inside on the ride back which was fun too.
It was interesting to see how many life vests and life boats there were on board. I am not sure how many cars can fit, but there were plenty of life vests!

Children were free as walk on, so we spent just around $75 since our teen counted as an adult. We probably wouldn’t do this ferry ride again, but we were glad to experience it once.
A bientôt!

That is so cool that your father-in-law lives in a monastery. I would love to visit one.

I love ferry rides! We’ve never taken one to long island before though (in fact I’ve never been to Long Island!). I’m going to have to read up on where it leaves from in CT. I’m sure it’s at the other end of the state but still… it can’t be too far from here.

It goes to Bridgeport!

How interesting your father-in-law lives in a monastery. That kind of life fascinates me. I live riding ferries. This one is huge! Good thing you brought sweatshirts.

Yes, one less thing to buy even though I did buy a souvenir one in Montauck.

It is good that you experienced it…even if you wouldn’t do it again. That’s many of the outings for us…we enjoyed it but don’t need to do it again.
XOXO

I live on Long Island, so I’m very familliar with the Port Jeff ferry. We’ve taken it many, many times. We’ve also taken the one from Orient to New London. It’s definitely a fun ride and it beats going over the bridges and through the Bronx traffic to get off (and back on!) this island!! Heehee!! Now I need to investigate that monestary though, never heard of that one…how interesting!

Oh, we will need to explore the other ferry one year!
