Dressing Up an Athletic Skirt and Working on Proportions
Jodie suggested dressing up athleisure for our second blog post, so I packed up my athletic skirt which I hadn’t worn yet this year. It is a great skirt for travel as it can be folded up easily in a suitcase and I did wear my aubergine one on the plane to and from Costa Rica a couple years ago. In the past I have worn it with a simple tank, so I wanted to see how I could dress it up. Once again, I need to thank Rob (Jodie’s husband) for these great pictures. And please stop by Jodie’s blog to see how she dressed up her athletic skirt: I loved her outfit!
1/2, 1/2 proportions

There is nothing wrong with this outfit, but while the outfit is still very pretty, the proportions are not my favorite. However it was a great outfit to shop and sight see in, and I was very comfortable in the Arizona heat. I typically wear my Halftee everyday skirts (I have 2) with a tank or more of an athletic look, so dressing it up was a fun challenge.
It was so fun to choose accessories for this outfit: turquoise is one of my favorites, so I chose it as my accent color. I have been creating a lot of bracelet stacks these past few months: I keep on the lookout for colors I can add when I am traveling or in an antique shop or boutique and then I create a stack with either 3 or 5 bracelets. The earrings above were a find after a race in a small town here in Georgia in an antique shop a couple years ago.

I really like the color and print of the halter top with the teal skirt, and the sandals while not heeled are a nice strappy pair than adds to the dressier look. They replaced a pair I had a few years ago: I think turquoise/teal sandals are a great addition in anyone’s closet for the spring and summer months. It is an instant color pop and it really goes with everything!

I also like taking this little clutch (it comes with a crossbody strap that I typically use) when I travel: it is very small, but fits my phone and money and adds a fun little print mixing to what I wear.
2/3, 1/3 proportions

My original outfit idea was the outfit I shot with Jodie, but after looking at my pictures, I decided to try the same outfit with another athletic skirt (or skort in this case) that was shorter to see whether I liked the outfit proportions better. I do! I think because the top is a series of ruffles and is flowy, that the longer hem of the first athletic skirt can make it less visual appealing. There is nothing wrong with the first outfit, but I do like this one better. The pictures were so good though of the first outfit, that I started vacillating with which outfit I liked best, lol!
I wore some fun starfish earrings and a beaded bracelet I bought at Just Be Youtiful, a boutique near Jodie’s. I had so much fun shopping there and came home with lots of treasures I will be sharing on the blog over the next few months. If you are ever in the Surprise/Sun City area, you need to stop by her boutique!

I do love both outfits. And I sometimes think we get too caught up in the proportions. Yes, they can make an outfit look better or worse. But sometimes they’re just there.
I think the fact that you wore such a fun and interesting top, along with the fabulous colorway, is the focal point of the first outfit, and that’s why the proportions don’t make such a difference. My opinion only.
And i’m super glad you took that skort and love it, because it looks fabulous on you

Yes, I think the colors really draw the eye vs the proportions!

While I certainly don’t think either look is wrong either I do tend to like the proportions of the second one better as well.

I know! It’s hard for me to make a decision with which I like best, I do think the second one is more slimming and figure flattering but like Jodie says, does everything have to be flattering?

I love how that teal really brings out the color in the blouse! And the sandals are a great complementary shade!

I agree – there’s nothing wrong with the first outfit but the proportions are better in the second one. Love that pretty top paired with the athletic skirt! So cute!
