Bell Mountain, GA

Once I decided where we were spending our anniversary trip, I looked up activities in the area. The one thing that stood out to me that we had not done in the past was to go up to Bell Mountain. The google search describe the drive up as paved and very steep, but the views would be incredible from the top. I concur on both accounts! The drive up was very steep and I would not have enjoyed driving it myself because it was so steep and there were a couple sharp hairpin turns, but the views were worth the effort.

It appears that the top of the mountain has 2 large masses of quartz, but when you get closer you see that they are large mounds made of quartz rocks. 3 men tried to mine the top of the mountain in the early 1960s and failed. That is why is is 2 versus one large mountain of quartz.

On one side you can climb to the top with stairs as climbing the rock face would be unstable and dangerous. The 2nd mound has a fairly easy way to get up and is quite beautiful for pictures.

You would think that these rocks being covered in graffiti would be ugly, but the graphics really makes it quite beautiful and great for pictures. I am sure each one has a story. The graffiti started as vandalism, but the county later permitted it and it really makes it a unique feature of the mountain. Some people still probably consider it vandalism, but I do look at it as a form of art. I do want to share another viewpoint about the graffiti by sending you to a post from Wander Georgia who has a very different opinion of the graffiti. I would typically agree with him, if I saw the graffiti in other places.

We enjoyed the scenery and were glad we made the drive. The size of Lake Chatuge is well displayed from this height. And this was the perfect sunny, clear day for amazing views.

A bientôt!
