Night Jungle Tour with Jade Tours
The second tour we took while in the area near Manuel Antonio National Park was a night jungle tour with Jade Tours. This was one of the tours listed at our resort that could be booked for us and since we were in the area for just a short amount of time, we decided to take advantage of the opportunity. The tour was $55+ tax per person. I felt that the price was appropriate since it offered an experience we couldn’t have on our own but my husband thought it could have been about 10 dollars less each since it was a shorter tour. The tour including bringing us to the private reserve was about 3 hours and included a typical Costa Rican dinner.
Frogs
Our guide, Jorge, was very knowledgeable and helped us take pictures of the different animals we encountered, mostly frogs and insects. I was amazed at how the frogs would stay still as he shined his flash light on them. He would identify each frog by sound before finding them.
It actually was pouring the first few minutes of the tours which would limit what we could see and he almost canceled the tour so we wouldn’t be charged. We waited for 10 minutes to see if the storm would pass and it did so we were able to continue on.
Insects
It was noisy near the frogs and I am hoping to have my husband share one of his videos with me in hopes of adding it at the end of this post. The second most interesting thing we saw was a millipede. Millipede spray cyanide to kill their prey and Jorge should us how he does that.
Very weird bug this was! The Bengay plant neutralizes the poison and he demonstrated that too.
Our guide told us this little guy above was a nymph, a baby. He was the size of my index finger.
Flora
We were supposed to always check around our feet with our flashlight during the tour to make sure no snakes were on the path. The main venemous snake to look out for was a brown snake. Thankfully, we didn’t see any snakes apart from a small one in a tree. The plant below is supposed to be deadly if ingested. I should have asked its name.
Reptiles
If you look closely, there is a lizard at the top in the middle in the first picture (he looks like a leaf). The 2nd lizard is a false chameleon.
We really enjoyed our tours and I loved all of the frogs especially!

What a neat tour! I think I would have been a bit nervous in the jungle at night with so many critters around that I can’t see.
mimifce
It would have been cool to see even more creatures but I guess the other ones would be afraid of our flashlights.

Oh, what a wonderful tour! I would have been freaking out thinking about snakes falling out of trees and such! And, I had to skip the picture of the millipede…those things just give me the willys!!! Thanks so much, Mireille, for sharing this trip with us!

Gosh, what a cool experience, although I might be a little creeped out about those snakes.
Now that’s definitely an experience you wouldn’t have gotten on your own.

Oh my goodness, those little frogs are the best! Coincidentally I am wearing a pair of frog-shaped silver stud earrings today 🙂

There were another type of frogs called glass frogs but those pictures are on my hubby’s phone.

I sure didn’t get too close to the bugs! Yes, knowing the price for things is helpful!

There are some amazing photos here. What an experience and well worth the cost I’d say and I’m a very frugal person so I should know!!!
It is just the most interesting vacation you could take I think!
mimifce
Yes! The plane tickets actually were not bad at all but since we had Delta skymiles, we only had to pay taxes and fees so even better!
Michelle
Oh wow! What an intriguing experience! A millipede that sprays cyanide? Talk about chemical warfare. Your entire trip looks amazing!

I didn’t know that about them either.
