Atlanta Botanical Gardens: Niki in the Garden

Since I bought a family membership to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens this spring, I am hoping to visit once or twice every season. When we last came, we missed the tulips by a day, but I made sure to look up when the new exhibit was scheduled and planned our visit the first week after school ended. The new exhibit was fun and colorful and I found that I liked most of the pieces. Niki in the Garden is an exhibition of large sculpture by a French artist named Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) and was famous for her sculptures that expored themes of f”eminism, mythology, politics and personal trauma”.

“The often-playful, extremely colorful sculptures range from Grand Step Totem, weighing in at 2,000 pounds, and the Large Yelling Man, towering as 16.5 feet, to small wall hangings of reliefs measuring 2 feet square.” (source: Atlanta Botanical Website). There are 40 sculptures on display and we saw most of them.

We had fun guessing the names of the sculptures and tricking each other as sometimes one of us would see the names before the others. We also shared which ones were our favorites. The two above were at the top of our list. I also really like the snake ones in the rainforest building.

We took the time to look at the different materials used for these sculptures. The artist was quite creative!

There were 3 fountains sculptures, but my favorite of the three was the snake tree above. The one below is a pouf snake and I explained to my boys that a pouf is an ottoman. That made sense when I noticed the shape of the snake like a small seat or foot rest.

I really liked the piece below two which was really reflective of the light. The gardens were busy on this day, but not overly crowded thankfully since it was the middle of the week. We were not the only ones who thought to enjoy the outdoors on this partly sunny day!

A bientôt!
