Closet Refresh for Spring: Why I switch out my clothes twice a year
There is no right or wrong way to organize your closet, but there are ways to make it work for you. I have friends who keep all of their clothes out year round (you do have to have a large enough closet for that) so that they can wear items year round (think sweater over a summer dress in the cold months). Some people like to organize by color and/or type of clothes or like to create a capsule wardrobe, while others like to have a large variety of clothes to choose from. Some like to purge clothes every other season or year while others will try to make items work for them and re-imagine them.
Put away a lot of my denim, added shorts/skorts and refolded the rest
I think I fall in the middle camp: I switch out clothes twice a year, usually in a staggered manner: fall/winter around October (of course I keep out some summer clothes since it won’t get very cold then) and spring/summer (around mid March to April depending on the weather). When I pull out my clothes from my flat bins, I make sure that what I hang is still something that I enjoy wearing. I typically have a couple pieces to donate, but not much. For example, this year, I donated a short dress and 2 pairs of joggers I hadn’t worn or reached for in a couple of years.

While I do try to wear things I am not sure I still like, if I find that I have to “force” myself to wear them, I do donate them. My wardrobe is a mixture of thrifted and retail pieces and this year the only things I bought retail was 2 pairs of linen pants from Old Navy and a white skirt from Francesca’s. I did not shop January/February and have thrifted a few times in March.

Why Switch Clothes in Your Closet?
- I do not like visual clutter, so having less clothes out allows me to have some breathing space in my closet
- it’s easier to see my clothes when they are not all scrunched up together (my dresses still all though)
- your clothes feel like they are new when you haven’t seen them for a season or two
- I usually feel like I have more to wear when there are less clothes out
- you don’t forget you had bought something because you can see it
Short sleeve tops and a few sweatshirts at the top,
3/4 sleeves and blazer at the bottom as you enter the closet
Tunics, skirts and jumpsuits at the top,
vests, flowy pants and boho tops at the bottom.
I can now access and see my clothes easily and do not feel overwhelmed when I enter my closet. I also know that I like everything hanging as I pulled some items out of tubs and made a couple “weeding” decisions. I am excited about my spring and summer wardrobe and the ability to shop my closet and be creative!

I like your process! Having the season in front of you makes getting dressed so much easier!

It really does! For example today, I wanted a layer for my dress as it is cold this morning and having my blazer in a prominent spot made me reach for one I wouldn’t have picked first.

I love to see how people organize their closets. I’m one of those who don’t have to switch out for the seasons. I made sure of that when we built because I’ve done it for too many years. I also like combining different seasons during the transition days.

I think as long as you can find and see your things, then it works!

I am planning to do spring cleaning. What a refreshing and practical approach to closet organization! I really enjoyed reading about your seasonal method and how it helps create a sense of space, clarity, and creativity. It’s inspiring to see how thoughtfully you assess what to keep, donate, or repurpose—and I especially love the balance you strike between thrifted finds and selective retail purchases. Your system feels both intentional and freeing. Thank you for sharing such helpful insights—it’s definitely motivated me to take a more mindful look at my own wardrobe.

Thanks, Melody! I really try to be careful with what I buy. Since there has been church most days this week, I’ve taken advantage of wearing a different dress each day.

I also like the idea of changing my closet seasonally.

Great points on why to switch it out. Things do feel new when we haven’t seen them in a couple of months. I’m in have it all out at once camp (obviously…heck, I don’t have anywhere to put the other seasons unless we build a shed in the backyard, LOL). But things are cramped, and I did struggle recently to find something even though I knew where it should be.
Tresi and I are working on an idea of how to reimagine our clothes. It will be right up your alley.

I was thinking of you as the person in the camp of having everything out lol! But I think every person has to figure out what works for them, and then if it doesn’t work for them, make adjustment.

I feel like I’ve tried just about every closet organization technique under the sun except rotating my clothes out like this. My closet right now is *stuffed* so I think it could add a lot (especially by making my clothes feel “new” again). But I just have a hard time imagining it working well in Colorado where it snows in May and September sometimes haha. I feel like I will have wished I still had my sweaters out! Maybe it’s time I finally try it though, I enjoyed reading about how you do it.

You probably would have to keep the sweaters out year round so you can layer them when needed be.

I wish I could do this but I just keep all of my clothes in my closet!

I think it depends on how much you have, how much space you have and what organization you like. Different things work for different people.

I actually swap out my clothes at least 3 times (sometimes 4) times a year. Just last week I put away some of my thickest sweaters and my fleece lined pants and putlled out my cropped pants, blouses, and short sleeved shirts. In another couple of months I’ll finish putting away anything winter/fall and pull out shorts and tanks and sundresses. Then I sort of do the reverse in fall; putting away the real warm clothes and pulling out the lighter sweaters and waiting for the really thick warm winter clothes until more like Thanksgiving time. It can be a lot of work but I love feeling like I have new clothes to pick from every few months.
