Arizona Cactus: Morning Walks
I cannot help myself: each time I have visited Arizona (now 3 times in 5 years I think), I have to take pictures of cacti! I am not sure what it is about them that I find so cool and interesting. Maybe it is just the newness, the originality: when you live where there are only hardwoods and pine trees, a cactus is exotic!

I enjoy my morning walks at home, but morning walks in Arizona are even more fun. Apart from all of the cool cacti, yard decorations are unique and then my favorite, bunnies and quails abound! We even saw some coyotes on our last walk!
This year the prickly pear cacti were abundant, and I loved that pink color fruit. I even had a prickly pear lemonade at the restaurant (delicious) that I shared last week.
I learned that I have been mispronouncing saguaro my whole life and that there is a difference between a saguaro cactus and a cardon cactus which has lower arms and a slightly different color.

Did you notice the metal quail? While these cacti were not in bloom at this time of the year, they are some of my favorites with their squatty shape and large spines.

Going on daily walks on this trip got me back to going on walks at home. I have been taking along my 7 year old on a 1 to 2 mile walk on some mornings before breakfast. I also have started taking a 2 mile walk down our giant hills some evening. Once school starts, I will make those walks brisker and longer. It’s time to get back to running a couple times a week!
A bientôt!

Oh yes, cacti seem very exotic to me too! Those are beautiful photos and they give a real glimpse into the different species of plants you have in the States.

They really are quite lovely in their uniqueness; we certainly only ever see some indoors in pots!

I have seen a couple yards with some here, but not much. We get too much rain!

I agree that cacti are quite exotic! If I saw so many different varieties, I’d want to take lots of photos too!

We have a big Zoological/Botanical Garden in the town where I work (or worked before working from home). Cactuses (I use that form because it’s more fun to say ;-)) were always my favorites to visit. There’s such an enormous and beautiful variety! I totally get you not being able to resist taking photos of them.

Yes! Last year, when I visited Jodie we went to the botanical gardens there in Phoenix and there was such an amazing variety!

This is such a trip down memory lane for me. As a kid, my Dad had a cacti garden, and I enjoyed it tremendously. All the variety and blooms

Cactus are so interesting! They are so different from other plants, I feel like they belong on an alien planet. I was lucky enough to be in AZ one year when the saguaro were blooming. So cool!
mimifce
Yes! They are so neat!

I understand your fascination- they’re so different! Love that first pic, and also the prickly pears. Don’t think I’ve ever seen them before. Thanks for linking at #TuesdayTwirl

The prickly pears were really neat. Would be hard work to get them ready to eat though!

My husband and I were NPS volunteers at Organ Pipe Cactus Nation Park in Ajo a few years ago. The entire desert was amazing to me, but the variety of cacti is incredible.

That would have been a really cool experience!
