Republic of Georgia, part 4, canyon and caves
After returning to Tbilisi for a few days, we traveled to Kutaisi, a city in West Georgia. We used an app called Map.Me to get there. This app was a life saver since it does not use date but the gps on your cell phone. You can use it in any country! Kutaisi is a great home base to visit wonderful monasteries (Gelati and Motsameta), the Bagrati cathedral, Prometheus Cave and Okatse Canyon.
Bagrati Cathedral
We visited this cathedral a few times since it was a 5 minutes walk from our hotel. It is an 11th century cathedral that is a UNESCO world heritage site. We attended liturgy there on Sunday and were surprised with beautiful chants chanted by men (some in traditional Georgian attire).
Prometheus Cave
At first I was worried that I would have to wait outside with the 2 youngest because the website said that children had to be a certain age to go in the caves. However that was not the case. Our guide spoke English and did a great job describing the different rock formations.
Okatse Canyon
We traveled next to Okatse Canyon. We walked down to where the canyon is which was a nice hike through a forested area with horses grazing and pretty views.
We had to take turns going on the suspended bridge over the canyon because my youngest children were not allowed (4 years old and infant) . The bridge is 800 meters long and over 50 meters above the water. While you are safe at all times, you definitely have the feeling of being way up high! The views were amazing and after my turn I met up with my family at the little cafe when you exit the bridge over the gorge for some icecream.

Thankfully nobody felt claustrophobic! There was also a boat ride you could do at the end but we didn’t do it. Would have been pretty cool!

It should be fun! Having grown up abroad, it always surprises me when people don’t travel as much as we do. While on a budget, we’ve managed to take the boys on several out of the country trips. Glad you get to explore! Where are you going?

As far as I understand it does my using your phone location. I just was amazed how technology works.. not using any data or internet for it to work. I had to shorten the video to 30s to be able to upload it. Hubby uploaded it to you tube too.

Yes, this was my favorite portion of the trip! The history of the cathedral was interesting and has undergone a lot of renovations. And the views from that bridge were really amazing. One of those places when you take a minute and tell yourself: remember this moment!
