Cost per wear

Have you heard fashion bloggers talk about cost per wear? While I enjoy shopping the clearance racks and thrift shopping, I do occasionally buy a piece a clothing that I consider expensive or more high end. Two examples that come to mind are my Zella Out & About 2 joggers which are $65 at Nordstrom and my Ugg Australia Women’s Fierce Deco Quilt Fashion Sneaker that you can now find from $69.95 to $100 depending on your shoe size on amazon.

The way I justify these items on my limited object is the cost per wear. Cost per wear is taking into account how many times you will wear an item. You may buy a cute shirt for $10 on the clearance rack and only wear it 5 times. Your cost per wear for that shirt is $2 per wear. I wore my joggers at least once a week last summer and probably 4 days out of 7 on our trip to the Republic of Georgia. Lets say I wore those joggers at least 40 times last year, my cost per wear is $1.60. So there was much value in buying a quality pair of joggers!

Why do I love these joggers? For once they are very comfortable and versatile. While my favorite way to wear them is to pair them with my black Nikes and a black top, they work well with stripes, and colorful top. They also dry very quickly which is very practical on a trip if you need to spot clean them or wash them.

As for my Ugg sneakers, I typically wear them any time I need to make a quick trip outside, I wear them instead of my Nikes and I can also wear them with skirts and dresses. So once again, I was worth to spend more money on a quality item as both probably have a couple more years of wear in them. And as I continue to pair them with my wardrobe, the cost per wear will decrease!

What can you take away from this? Shop within your budget but it can be worthwhile to sometimes splurge on a versatile, quality piece of clothing you know you will be able to enjoy many times!

A bientot!

I am always on a tight budget, but I have definitely been evaluating cost-per-wear lately. As a plus-sized woman, clothing tends to be both more expensive and dreadfully hard to find second-hand, but oh, how I have tried to make thrifted clothing work. What I have learned lately is that if I have to really TRY to make a thrift store item “work,” it doesn’t work, and I won’t wear it! It’s better to spend more – my favorite sweater was $70, but I wear it two or three times a week, and it works with jeans, dress slacks, and skirts – on an item that I will REALLY love and wear than to spend $3 or $5 on something that is really just going to take up space in the back of my closet forever.

That is so true! It has taken me a little while to embrace that fact but realizing how much I wear the more costlier item that fits me and is versatile definitely helps assuage any guilt

Yes, CPW! I’m all about considering the actual value of an item by how often I’ll wear it. Shoes are a great example of this. I’ve pair more than I desired at times for a good pair of shoes, but when I considered how much I’d wear them my angst faded away! And I love your joggers. I would wear those alot too!

Yes, sometimes there is the initial price tag shock but I have finally realized that it is ok especially that most of what I buy is inexpensive!
