October Sunday Showcase and Link Up: Kimonos: Dressy and Casual Looks

Welcome to the Sunday Showcase! Today we are visiting the idea of kimonos: there are many different types of kimonos with  different length, fabric and cuts… and they are very versatile pieces to have in your closet. I have a couple of light weight floral kimonos and a few solid kimono/cardigans. Ada and I are sharing ways to wear them casual or dressy. At the end of the post, I will have a little slideshow of my kimonos so you can really see that versatility! Don’t just wear yours one way! They are meant to be fun, add a little whimsy to an outfit! Make sure to visit Ada’s post to see more inspiration!

Kimono: Date night Look

I decided on this mustard yellow kimono for my dressy look because I struggle with it: I love the trim on it, the color, the length.. but I often feel frumpy wearing it. So I challenged myself to come up with a date night look that I would like.

Since I had never worn it with a dress, I thought it would add a fun element as well as a light layer of warmth for a fall evening. The dress was a $1 find at a church sale I think. I usually pair it with boots but for a date night, I think it looks nice with a little leg and chose my black booties instead. My brother sent me a gift card to Cracker Barrel and one of the 2 things I got was this clutch (which comes with a strap too). I love the pattern mixing it allows and even though it is more of a summer clutch I like it with this.

To avoid the frump, I added a wide belt. I did not wear my belts much till recently having discovered they are great for creating or adding a waist to an outfit. I also like how the kimono helps with coverage if a dress is on the shorter side. Gotta do something with my hair though! Feeling the need for a haircut!

Kimono: Casual Look

It always amazes me how Ada and I think alike as we take our pictures then email them to each other: look at our choice of casual looks: both burgundy floral kimonos over tees and jeans with fun shoes!

This second outfit is a great mom on the go outfit. I wore it on a rainy day to the grocery store and kids’ drop and school pick up. I am learning to only keep clothes that I am comfortable with so a lot of my mid rise jeans have not made the cut of staying in my closet. These are not too low so they are here to stay.

I ordered a curling iron and this was my first attempt with it: it didn’t do what I expected it to do but I like that it added volume to my hair. I will have to play around with it (it was much better the next couple of times). I am hoping to grow my hair a little longer than usual and hoping that adding some waves and volume will help me not want to chop my hair off! These 2 pictures were taken on a windy day to top it! We had lots of rain the night after hurricane Sally hit the gulf but the following afternoon was gorgeous. I love that fall encourages the boys to play outside. They have been playing tag a new fun way: it is bike/scooter/hoverboard tag!

Adding fashion sneakers to an outfit gives it an instant casual vibe! I have a little collection that I have accumulated over the years, and while I really don’t think that Converse are a confortable shoe, they are fun! I got rid of my not so white pair and probably won’t replace them. With the change of seasons, I am glad to add my jeans back in the rotation. Now that it is getting darker at night, we need to put this fire pit back into use. The only thing it did last month was injure my husband!

I found these sage skinny cargo jeans at Loft a couple years ago and I like their lighter color (they work really well in the springtime). You can find kimonos pretty much anywhere nowadays. I wouldn’t spend much on them as I do not wear them very often. Amazon, thrift stores, Ross or TJmaxx are great places to find inexpensive ones.

I really love Ada’s kimono! The colors are so rich, the texture looks so soft and the belt is just icing on the cake!

Blogger Feature

I chose Jodie’s (Jtouchofstyle.com) post about how to wear a body suit 5 different ways. Jodie is probably my favorite fashion blogger! She loves to thrift and find the coolest pieces (I drool over her skirt collection, her cool jackets and all the fun colors in her closet) and love how she doesn’t worry about trends and what everyone else is wearing. She is always sharing different ways to wear an item, loves comfy shoes and discovering places where she lives (so do I) and I also love that her blog features her mother as well as her friend  Lesleywhich show us variety in styles and ages.
