Nantahala Gorge and other views

The drive to Boone, NC is such a picturesque drive. It takes you through Ellijay and Blue Ridge in the North Georgia mountains and through the Nantahala Gorge. We often stop at the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) for the pretty views and to have a picnic by the river when we head to North Carolina. We’ve gone white water rafting nearby before (before kids) and have also taken a train ride that turns around there. There are many activities you can do and I am thinking we might make it a destination this summer since it is only 3 and half hours from our house. It also might be cooler than where we live.

On this occasion, I had packed some yummy baguette sandwiches and snacks so we ate and walked around a little. It is pretty quiet in winter here. We took advantage of the facilities (a must with kids) and the boys enjoyed throwing rocks and sticks in the river.

It took us a while to figure out what the hanging numbered posts were but then we remembered that they have white water kayak competitions here. The water was clear and beautiful.

If we come stay nearby this summer, only my husband and the 2 oldest would go white water rafting, but we could go tubing, fishing, hiking, train rides and there are other family friendly activities. I would definitely want to find a place on the water though because they is just something about a morning coffee overlooking the river. It is also really close to Cherokee where we’ve been before.

I shared my traveling outfit on Monday in this post. This was a thrifted $3 find if I can remember correctly. I have worn it at least 3 times already so that brings it down to $1 cost per wear.

The neighborhood we stayed at was considered a resort community and we had access to the indoor pool at no extra cost. This was wonderful and we used it twice. There also were indoor tennis courts (at extra cost) that my husband and the boys used a couple of times too.

They even had a second of the pool perfect for younger kids with water only high to 2 feet and with a wall around it.

This rental was a little more that some of the others we had seen but location and amenities were definitely worth the extra money. Our first full day, we left the kids with our oldest and my husband and I went to downtown Boone for a couple of hours. We shopped a little and enjoyed ourselves. Boone is home to Appalachian State College and you could see sign of it being a college town. It was a quaint area with some interesting shops.

My two favorite shops were a consignment store (where I didn’t buy anything) and a Western store where I drooled over beautiful pairs of cowboy boots.

A bientôt!
