How to Style a Kimono for Spring and Summer
One way that encourages me to shop my closet is to set a theme for outfits for a week or so. I typically break it up some so I do not get bored, but it does help me make sure I wear all the things. At the end of April, I decided it was time to style my kimonos as the weather was perfect for a light layer and since kimonos can provide protection from the sun when needed. My goal was to create a variety of outfits to inspire you to shop your closet using these ideas as loose guidelines.
With wide leg jeans
While most of my kimonos are thrifted, this one was an Amazon find a few years ago. I love the neutral print and reach for this one quite often. I think I saw someone style their kimono with white pants and black tee and decided to use that idea as the inspiration for this outfit.
With jeans
Since this thrifted kimono is size XL and can be overwhelming on my frame, I knotted the ends and used a Maggie Snap to keep it together.
With a dress
I wanted to wear this kimono but wanted a bright color under it since it is spring. I realized it would be fun over a dress so I looked through my collection and voila: this Target red dress fit the bill! It was a little chilly but I really like how it turned out.
With leggings
I wore this for my son’s first college visit. It took me a minute to figure out which top to wear under the kimono since I wanted something bright and a little longer since I was wearing leggings. I really love the color combo of this red/orange and turquoise similar to the outfit with the jeans.
Over a Jumpsuit
This is not technically a kimono but I am using a button down dress as a kimono so I thought it fit the theme.

So many cute looks! I still have yet to actually purchase a kimono!

Wow, you don’t have one! I wear them the most of tanks with jeans but I really like them as a light weight topper. They work over bathing suits too.

Most kimonos are too voluminous and boho for my own style, but these look great on you! The shirtdress worn as a topper is a great alternative for those of us with a more classic style. The red/orange/aqua print one with the leggings outfit is amazing – I would wear that one in an instant! It’s like the perfect mullet kimono! 😀

I love kimonos because they are an easy way to add that boho style!

It’s kimono weather here too, and I just threw one on over my workout outfit for grocery shopping after Pilates. I love all of these looks and the magnets are perfect.

Our spring has been much cooler than usual, like a real spring so I am taking advantage to wear the light layers!

The kimono over the dress and jumpsuit is my favorite looks. I have a black jumpsuit and I bet any of my kimonos would go well with it. I never thought of using one to help protect yourself from the sun, I need to remember that!

I have tried any kimonos over my other jumpsuit so I will have to try that soon.

I love how versatile kimonos are! I really like that top look with the black tee underneath. Isn’t it funny how black can sometimes make such a dramatic difference? Would you believe I didn’t own a single kimono two years ago? I just didn’t think they were for me. Now, I have several and love wearing them to brighten my day (dopamine dressing, right)!

That first one is probably one of my favorites and yes to the contrast with the black bodysuit. I am glad you were converted to wearing kimonos because they sure can be fun to wear.

The look with the jumpsuit is my favourite! I never tried a kimono. We don’t see them often here.

Funny how that outfit didn’t look great at first until I figured out how to make the topper more flattering.

You had me at KIMONO!! Oh, how I love them. And I would happily wear every one of these kimonos you have styled. You look especially amazing and slim and fit in the first look. Love the flare pants. They are really flattering.
I need some of those Maggie magnets and snaps. You basically reworked that XL kimono to fit you perfectly.
My favorite is the one you paired with the leggings. Love those colors. Like a southwest sky and sunset. The soft aqua really looks pretty under the coral-orange kimono.

Thank you, Leslie! If I can watch my sugars, I hope to keep my figure lol! While I run, I also like ice cream! The kimonos can be really fun: mine are mostly bright but I think that first neutral one is my favorite.
