Summer fun: Visiting a House Museum

A few weeks ago, we didn’t feel like going to the pool, but it was hot and humid so we decided to visit this house near our library. I looked up the tour hours and we called ahead of time to make sure there would not be a group. Of course, I didn’t check the types of payments accepted and when we got there, I realized that it was cash only. I typically do not carry cash but the tour guide was nice enough to allow us to do the tour and I went to the bank right after to return with our payment.

The house is called the Rose Lawn house because of its color and the 200 rose bushes that one of the owners used to grow. It was the house of Sam Jones, a local circuit rider preacher. A funny fact about this house: it started as a one story home and was risen to add a story/floor under in 1895 for the cost of $110. Can you believe the first floor is an addition built underneath the now 2nd floor?

This is the entryway. The first floor boasts 12 foot ceilings and large double doors. It includes a parlor, family room, two dining rooms and kitchen.

The property includes a carriage house, smoke house and school house. Above is the smoke house.

I am always “jealous” of wide expanses of grass. While we have a nice yard because we have a corner lot but nothing like this!

I am so grateful for all of the nearby places that we can visit for a small budget. Activities with our kids can get expensive but we have some affordable entertainment options within 20 minutes from house.

A bientôt!
