Desert Botanical Gardens, Phoenix, Arizona

I’ve been back from visiting Jodie (here’s her blog if you don’t know her yet) and Rob in Arizona for a few days and back in the swing of things. It was a wonderful time turning online friends into in person friends. Thank you for your hospitality and making me feel welcome! I enjoyed time with like minded people and Jodie and I were such birds of feather. And I love Arizona! I had visited twice before, once on a visit to Sedona in my late teens, and again a couple of years ago for my brother’s wedding in Scottsdale.

I’ve always love cacti, so visiting the botanical gardens was a treat! We first took blog pictures (Jodie and her crew are such experts at posing) and then took our time visiting the gardens before dinner. One thing I didn’t realize about the Phoenix area the last time I visited, was the number of mountains surrounding it. They are not very tall but stand out with their ochre color.

Aren’t these cacti cool? They are crested cactus: the cells in the growing stem divide outward. It is an unusual mutation that can occur in saguaro cacti too.

It was surprisingly chilly on that evening: it was windy too, but thankfully I brought along my sweatshirt to wear after our blog pictures. We really had fun figuring out what the different types of cacti looked like: for example the last one looked like snakes and we couldn’t figure out where the cactus started.

Wow! These were some of my favorites! That second cactus was furry and soft to the touch. The top flower is not opened yet and looks like an eye: it really looks extraterrestrial! I also love the fountain and seating area and what a beautiful bloom on that last cactus.

A bientôt!
