Tellus Museum: Old Tech Alert

A couple months ago, we decided to take advantage of the 1st week of the month free museum entrance with your bank of America card perk to visit the Tellus Museum newest exhibit and building. Only card member get the free admission, so we still had to pay for our children it still gave us a break. We spent the most time in this Replace by the Smartphone gallery (which I am sharing here), but we did visit the temporary Journey to Space Gallery. We are hoping to go back and visit that one before it is rotated out, but I am not sure we will have the time.

I shared the outfit I wore a while back, but decided to share it again since it was fun! I really enjoyed visit this exhibit: my husband and I told the children how the visit dated us and we remembered a lot of the different older technology. It is amazing how smartphones are like little computers and really replace a lot of these bulky tools we used to use.

Remember your kitchen wall phone! What about the fun shaped ones or the rotary phones? Have you ever used a pay phone? I am sure if we came across a pay phone, the boys would find it a novelty and would want to take a picture next to it! What about your computers? While desktops are still used sometimes, the boys were fascinated by floppy disks and how bulking computers were. I remember our office in our house two houses ago and how much space the computer took.

We still like some of our old gaming consoles (we kind of miss our Wii, but we still probably play more board games than computer/gaming games. The boys do have a Nintendo they share, but since electronics time is limited at our house, they do spend more time with real games. I still have my camera, but haven’t used it in years. I paid a lot for it and took some great pictures with it. I just wished I had learned how to use it more professionally.

I learned how to type on a type writer similar to the one on the right. That was high school in the South of France. We didn’t use computers till I was in college in Birmingham, AL nearly in 2000. Yes, we wrote our essays on paper! I actually learned how to write with pens and fountain pens in France. Cursive was a thing then!

Is there any old technology you miss? I like how smartphones make it easier to navigate with GPS and to communicate with people, to take pictures and look for information , but I do think they have brought a lot of problems with them including a lot of laziness. We don’t try to figure out things anymore and we tend to want instant gratification.

A bientôt!

Wow…talk about a trip down memory lane…and since I’m older than you, I have even more memories.
But my dad was an early adopter of the Mac computer and used to Beta test many of the programs (like Word and Excel), so in college I was able to use a computer, but most people didn’t.
    How cool was this,

I first want to thank you for commenting on my blog post. How nice of you! I appreciate that!
Your outfit was fabulous. Beautiful colors.

I remember all of these relics! Lol!
That sure does date me. Have you ever left home without your phone?? It’s not the end of the world but it sure does make me feel like I forgot a piece of clothing!

Our phones were very important when we just traveled recently in Europe. It was our way to check into our Bed and Breakfast places. It also helped with GPS when we were walking and ChatGPT took us on walking tours. So as much as we hate them… they are very helpful.

So happy I visited you today.
    Happy Weekend!

I know: the few times I forgot my phone while going on errands had me feeling weird but it’s not really a bad thing. We are so attached to them nowadays. You are right that they do come in handy while traveling. We have used them abroad with a GPS app that doesn’t use wifi to navigate. It is amazing what we can do nowadays with technology.

Half of me would love to see this, the other half would probably be frustrated.
I’m already dreading when life forces me to get a smartphone just so I can do banking from home when I don’t use it otherwise.
I really think we are too dependent on devices.

I agree! I try to limit my sons time on their electronics and unlike many of their friends they do not get their first phone until they are in 8th grade which is when they turn 14.

Oh I adore looking at old tech! I worked in the tech industry so was fortunate to have lots of the latest gadgets. I agree with you on smartphones. They’ve taken over too many aspects of our lives. I love the pink and silver outfit, the tulle skirts is gorgeous. Thanks for linking!
