How to Make a Fancy Dress more Casual
I shared this dress earlier this month for my birthday post. When I bought it I thought of it only as a special occasion dress but then I started to think about as any of my other dress. Is it dressy and colorful? Yes it is, but that does not mean it can only be worn for that occasion. Wearing this dress from I’ll Have What She is Wearing to church and the botanical gardens shows you that a dress can really be for any occasion. Here are the steps I took to tone it down and make your fancy dress more casual:
Making My Dress Casual with Sneakers
Adding sneakers (in my case white ones) is probably one of the easiest ways to make any outfit or dress more casual. Wearing sneakers made sense for a couple hours in church followed with an hour or so walking at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
I had a few issues with the length of the dress with flatter shoes so I resorted to holding it up half the time.
Making my dress more casual with a denim jacket
Every blogger out there will tell you how essential a denim jacket is for your wardrobe. It is a great layer in the fall and spring and there are so many different styles and colors. I have quite a few and this 3/4 length navy one is my lightest weight one. So it was perfect to wear on this still warm day.
Adding Simpler Accessories
I added small earrings that didn’t draw attention, wore a backpack purse to keep my outfit casual. The pretty details of this leather purse from IdeasValyen really went well with this dress.
I kept my dress on my shoulders (instead of off the shoulders) which also makes the dress more wearable for our planned activity. I loved wearing this special dress on my real birthday and I plan to wear it again soon.
A bientôt!

You just look so fabulous in this dress, Mireille! I can see why you’d want to wear it more than just for special occasions! Could you belt it and draw it up a bit so it doesn’t drag on the ground? Your best accessory is that last one…the one with the dinosaur shirt! What a cutie!

I’m SO glad you’re wearing it casually, because the colors are just fabulous.
You could always take off the lowest tier so it’s shorter???

I thought about that but then it would be more midi and I like it as a mazi. Someone suggested a belt so will try that next.

My goodness, I LOVE your navy denim jacket! Such a nice alternative to a typical wash of denim. It looks spectacular with that dress, too! The lightweight denim is just right for this transition season. Well done!

It was a really nice find quite a few years ago. And it truly is very light.

It was funny because we saw one other lady with a very bright outfit and my husband was saying I should take a picture with her!

Hi! I love the way you have combined the dress with that pair of sneakers. I hate it when people believe that you can’t look elegant with some sporty shoes. The dress is perfect for you, it is amazing. I tend to choose darker colors, and now in Madrid fall is coming, so I prefer to use other type of tones.
By the way, I have just discovered your blog and it is really nice, I will be checking your future posts

Thank you for stopping by my blog, Sofia! I have never been to Madrid but grew up in the south of France so we use to spent time in Barcelona and the north of Spain growing up. I love how white sneakers really work for everything even pretty dresses.

The funny thing is I bought it for my anniversary trip and ended up not wearing it there. But glad I have worn it twice in September.
