To Keep or not to Keep: the Saga of a Sequin Skirt

Last month, Jodie shared an Old Navy sale for a sequin skirt in her newsletter. While I am loving textured sweaters, pants and skirts, I really hadn’t been on the lookout for a sequin skirt. However, I was instantly intrigued and interested. The skirt came in 3 colors (cream, silver and light green) and was less than $30. After debating about it, I ordered it and it arrived surprisingly fast. My first impression was that I wasn’t sure about the sequins: they were clear over the shimmery cream sparkling skirt and I felt they looked a little cheap. I did like how the skirt swished when it moved and decided to wait till I wore it to make a decision whether to keep in to not to keep.

The clear sequins were not a deal breaker since I really liked the color, but I kept the tags on while I took some blog pictures. I did decide to order a black sequin skirt from Kohls and have it shipped to store and I also decided to stop by the mall to see what they had to offer. The idea of a sequin skirt appealed to me as I could wear it all December long and into January too! Styled casually, it would work for more than just holidays!

I made the decision to return this particular skirt. My reason was that I was expecting more of a pencil skirt shape to the skirt, expecting it to narrow below the knees, but it kinds of flares out without being an A line skirt either. It’s an in-between: I think that this fact would keep me from reaching for it and if I am not thrifting a piece, I really want it to tick all of the boxes.

The skirt is nice, but it does not have a wow factor for me, so back to the store it went. This outfit is inspired by a pin Jodie sent me and I then pinned more ideas on how to style a sequin skirt. You will have to come by and see if my search for a sequin skirt was successful and I will share another way to wear one! I am excited about finding the one!

I think this picture really illustrates what I am talking about when describing what style of skirt this is supposed to be. I shopped my closet for the rest of these elements: I have loved these booties from Valerie’s Avenue since I saw them and wear them often in the fall. My top is thrifted and while the sleeves are not the most practical, they are really fun! The olive lightweight jacket was a recent thrift find for a couple dollars and perfect for our weather. My scarf is one of my church scarves (I forgot I wanted to wear a scarf until I was in the car and I keep several of these in my glove compartment). My croissant pouch hold my car keys and my boys bought it for me for Christmas (I told them I would love it and I do!).

Please stop by Jodie’s blog and Marsha’s blog to see whether they kept the skirt they ordered and how they styled it! Below is the inspiration picture for today’s outfit. Do you have a sequin skirt? Would you wear one on any other day than Christmas or a special occasion?

You are absolutely right to return it is not a wow factor for you. I don’t own one, it always looks like the sequins get stuck in furniture. Or get lost along the way. Happy weekend!

I like the look of squin clothes but I don’t like the feel of sequins– at least not any I’ve tried. I did buy a sequin shirt to wear one New Years Eve but our plans got canceled and I found I never wore the shirt at all. It was very heavy and the sequins near the wrist and opened shoulder kept scratching me. That said I’ve always been intrguided by the idea of some sequined leggings!

I did noticed that a lot of tops I have tried have that scratchy feeling even if they are lined. And some are very heavy!

I really hadn’t thought about the shape because I couldn’t get past the plastic-y feel of the skirt. And, I still wonder if they won’t bend when you sit down on them. If you lost one, it would be really noticeable, too. I think you made the right choice (just like me). It’s not for us! I do love the way you styled it, and those booties are gorgeous!

I will try this exact outfit with the brown one I kept at some point. Just took pictures of 3 different outfits with it and like is so much more than this. But I think it is because of the size and plastic look of the paillette, that I really didn’t like.

I have learned that the fit matters a lot: I just got rid of a few things in my closet that I had for a while: the fit just didn’t work anymore.

I love the effect of sequins, but in clothing the pieces are often too heavy for my taste.
So I use them in my jewelry instead.

If the shape isn’t right, it was a good idea to send it back. I’m not a sequins person – it’s too high maintenance/easily damaged for me. I’d rather add sparkle and shine through jewelry (which is more durable and has much less of a fit issue).

I found one that I love and just took pictures of 3 different outfits with it. So glad, I sent this one back!

I’m so intrigued with the wrist detail of that top and how you had it peek out of the jacket.
You definitely need to do that again.Because that is just absolutely fabulous. I don’t care how functional it is.But it looks amazing.

It’s interesting you talk about the shape of it because I didn’t notice that at all.But then again, I got the petite so I wonder if that made a difference?

I think that was the first time I had layered that top under a jacket like that. I will definitely do it again! I just took pictures with the skirt I kept and I do like it so much better: small sequins, fun hem detail and it’s brown. I think the petite size does make it look different. I wonder which Marsha got because hers looks like mine.

The sequin skirt looks like so much fun to wear! I like all of your accessories with this outfit too, they really make it special. I understand continuing to look for something special, if you are not completely happy with a purchase, and in sounds like you found it! I have a few sequin pieces, but I find I only wear them for special occasions, because I feel they I will get damaged if I wear them for day. Thanks for sharing and have a good week!

I took some pictures of 3 casual outfits with the sequin skirt I found the following week, so look out for that post in a couple weeks!

I thought it looked nice, and a versatile color, but you’re right to send it back if it’s not a wow for you. I have a thing for sequins but can only recall 1 skirt. I found it a bit scratchy to sit on. Will be excited to see what you find! Thanks for linking at #TuesdayTwirl

Can’t wait to share it (I think blog is scheduled for the last Friday of the month), the one I found and kept is just perfect!
