Dress over Pants: 3 Inspiration Ideas

I love being inspired by other bloggers: yes, I have worn dresses over pants before, usually jeans, however after seeing both Shelbee and Marsha shared spring/summer outfits pairing loose dresses over linen pants, I thought I should try. Of course, I chose to do this during one of the warmest weeks we had here in Georgia, but I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable I was. I really enjoyed wearing my linen pants under my dresses so I could move around with ease.

Here are my inspiration pictures!

Shelbee has several other similar ideas she shared on her blog with more color including this one outfit she calls “bohemian fruit bowl” but because of the heat, the 2 above were more what I tried to replicate since more layers would be too warm. Here’s Marsha’s post “world cup of fabric.” I did add a dress to my closet while I was in Arizona that would be really fun over my white linen pants because of its lightweight quality and fun hem. You will see it styled different ways next month.

Mustard and Tan

I wore this for a day of errands including taking my mom grocery shopping and taking 2 of my boys to the doctor to get something checked out. My 15 year old had a lingering cough which would be very annoying and uncomfortable for his singing audition and his barbershop singing camp. Turns out it was just a very long lasting cold… it pretty much lasted the whole summer break.

Blush and White

While my top for this outfit is more of a short tunic than a dress, the outfit still follows the general lines of the inspiration pictures. I thrifted this top last year and it is a fun piece to play with. I have layered under it before in one of my favorite outfits earlier this year.

Turquoise and Grey

This dress is a little more fitted so the silhouette is different than my 2 outfits above. Again, I was surprised that I felt as cool as I did on hot days. I did like the protection of the pants for mosquitoes as we were visiting friends and spent time outdoors.

I love seeing the dress-over-pants trend styled in real life! Each outfit has its own personality, but I think the denim dress look is my favorite. It’s such a fun way to give dresses a whole new life, and you’ve definitely inspired me to experiment with pieces I already have in my closet. Thanks for the styling inspiration!

I remember when I was 30 or so, I wore dresses over jeans. No one liked it but me, lol. And it still is very stylish as you, and Shelbee and Marsha, show. Love it, I’m going to make a outfit like that myself now!

I definitely like the look better with certain dresses than others. For me, I really like the mustard dress one. I have a few I photographed yesterday with this fun green handkerchief hem dress: probably my favorite.

Very pretty outfits! I love the breezy look of white linen pants.

My fashion problem is saggy upper arms, so I tend towards wearing three quarter selvees, which can get very hot in the unusual warm summer weather we have been having here in Colorado. I am working ontoning my arms in the gym, but it is slow going…lol

Humidity is no fun! I realized this summer how much I am liking my sleeveless tops because it feels a lot cooler. I would try maybe a cap sleeve? I wouldn’t worry about saggy upper arms when dealing with weather. It’s too hot for that worry!

I don’t have dresses that are short enough to be worn with pants, but I remember a skirt over pants trend from a long time ago. I like the blue over denim!

Oh my goodness, Mireille, all three of these outfits are so, so good! If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the mustard over tan. I really like the earthy colors and the way those two pieces flow together. I recently styled an outfit similar to your second outfit which I will be sharing for our Thrifty Six post on August 17. I’m so honored that my dress over pants looks inspired you to create some different outfits for yourself. When it gets really humid, I actually prefer wearing pants because I cannot stand the sensation of my bare legs touching each other. LOL The long lines created by layering long over long are very flattering, too. Keep shining bright in your creative styles, my friend!

That was the one I really liked. I did it again with a green dress that has a handkerchief and it’s even better, coming on the blog in a few weeks.
